Into the Arctic: Wavian Sponsors the 2026 Orange Defender Arctic Convoy

Later this month, a large convoy of specially prepared 4×4 vehicles will set off on an extraordinary winter expedition – one that pushes both machines and people to their limits. The 2026 Orange Defender Arctic Convoy is a 5,000+ mile journey from the UK deep into the Arctic Circle, crossing frozen landscapes, ice roads, and some of the most remote regions in northern Europe.

A Journey Through the Far North

The convoy will travel through six countries – the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Norway – before reaching Nordkapp, often referred to as the northernmost point in Europe. From there, the route continues east toward the Russian border near Kirkenes, one of the most remote regions on the continent.

Starting on 30 January 2026, the team will be living entirely out of their vehicles for the full duration of the trip, facing rapidly changing winter conditions. One day temperatures may hover around -6°C, while the next could plunge to -35°C – a true test of equipment, planning, and endurance.

Beyond the Arctic Circle

Once the convoy crosses into the Arctic Circle at Jokkmokk, Sweden, the journey becomes significantly more demanding. The plan is to use as many unmaintained off-road routes as possible, navigating deep snow, forest tracks, and frozen terrain where help is often many hours – or days – away.

Getting stuck or snowed in isn’t a possibility; it’s an expectation. Progress will depend on teamwork, recovery skills, and the ability to adapt as conditions change.

Driving on Ice

One of the most unique aspects of this expedition is the inclusion of ice road crossings. Some of these are public winter routes across frozen rivers and seas, where ice thickness is monitored by local authorities. Others – such as frozen fjords – require the convoy to check ice depth themselves before crossing.

Driving on ice demands precision, trust, and absolute confidence in both vehicle and equipment. It’s an environment where preparation matters.
